The History of American Foods Mobile

In 1946, C. E. "Deannie" Vacalis was, by his own description, a produce peddler working out of his garage. He and his three business partners worked in the garage until they eventually outgrew the space, deciding to merge with a warehouse. Soon after, Deannie bought his partners out of the business. He sold retail and half cases of groceries during the years 1948 and 1949, acquiring more knowledge about the food service industry along the way.

Mr. Deannie, along with his wife Althea Vacalis, grew American Foods to be a very successful food service business during the 60s and 70s, eventually selling it in the early 80s. After a few changes of hands, the present owners, Harold "Butch" Owens, John Carpenter, Jim Statter, Tom Hegler, and Shirley Fillingim, purchased the company in 1994.
